2023 New Horizon Championship: Serving the Community Through Sport
The 2023 New Horizon Championship – 12th Annual Charity Table Tennis Tournament
The 2023 New Horizon Championship – 12th Annual Charity Table Tennis Tournament brought together athletes, volunteers, community leaders, sponsors, and supporters for a memorable day of sport and community spirit on September 24, 2023, at the Markham Wesley Centre.
Organized by the Canada-HK Unionville-Doncrest New Horizon Lions Club, the annual tournament provided an opportunity for participants of different ages, backgrounds, and skill levels to connect through friendly competition. The event welcomed more than 200 players across 44 teams, with participants competing in 11 categories ranging from recreational and rated singles events to community, inter-school, and invitational team competitions.
Beyond the excitement at the table, the 2023 Championship had an important charitable purpose. Working together with its event beneficiary, the Lions Club set a fundraising goal of $25,000 in support of the Centre for Immigrant and Community Services (CICS). The initiative demonstrated how recreation, volunteerism, and philanthropy can come together to make a meaningful difference in the community.
The tournament also received generous support from municipalities, community organizations, businesses, sponsors, and volunteers. The Cities of Markham and Richmond Hill supported the tournament as sponsors, while the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Toronto) supported the event and sponsored the Alumni Cup for the Hong Kong Inter-School Alumni Team category.
For CICS Foundation, the Championship was more than a sporting event—it was an example of what can be accomplished when community partners rally around a shared purpose.
